Very Bad Cracker Joke:
What do you get if you cross a detective with a skeleton??
>

..Sherlock Bones!

Hope everyone got what they wanted. Among my DVD gains were, of course, Bones S3 and Doctor Who S4. And 'Mamma Mia' cos I like the odd girlie nights out and that film reminds me of them!!

Apparently it has a singalong option. Don't tell my boys!!

Hi Steph

Equally bad joke from Sky Sports.

Q. What do you call a girl between two goal posts?
A. Annette !!!!

Talking of which, just got back from the game, fab result and the best I've seen the Red men play for ages. Great Reds result + 'Bones' boxed set(watched three eps yesterday!) = Fab holiday so far!

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

And don't even get me started on bad jokes--the "Annette" one made me think of all the guy-with-no-arms-and-no-legs jokes:

What do you call a guy with no arms and no legs in the swimming pool?

Bob.

Yup, I've had a little too much holiday cheer...

Hi all

Sofi, it sounds like you had a really good Christmas. I have the opposite problem hair wise, no matter what I do my hair steadfastly refuses to show any sign of bend or curl whatsoever!
I'm loving the bad jokes, I have another, I'm not sure it'll work typed but here goes:

Man goes to the doctor and says "Doctor I think I've got problems with my hearing"

Doctor says "Really what are the symptoms?"

Man replies "Homer's a fat guy and Marj has blue hair!"

If it doesn't work I apologise, actually its pretty bad so apologies anyway!

The holiday's have been good so far, just had a text from a friend inviting me to a party today but think I'm just going to chill out a bit. Its Alex's 40th birthday next week so we've got a chinese meal on Monday and a few of us are going to the horse racing on Tuesday, manic.

Now I'm going to try and rescue the trifle I started yesterday, for those of you who aren't familiar its a dessert involving jelly, fruit and custard which currently hasn't set (maybe due to the large amount of vodka used in the making!).

Enjoy the rest of your holiday break everyone.

grrrrrroooooooannnn! :laughing-lettersrofl: Make the most of this, people, after New Year I'll be closing this thread and, since TJ will be back at work, focusing back firmly on him!

Still, I don't think a bit of festive bonding has done the least harm  I'm going to pop over to the question thread to ask him what he does at Christmas and New Year!

Okay Steph, I promise you this is the last one (from me, at least--btw, Sharon, you had some I had never heard before! Bravo!)

What do you call a man with no arms and no legs on a shelf in the fridge?

Bud.

And that's one guy you won't find in my fridge! Hey, he'd better be named Guinness...

On that note, what does everyone have planned for New Year's festivities?

Nono, don't feel guilty, this is meant to be an offtopic thread; just don't want it to distract us too much from the TJ stuff or me from continually pushing for improvements from Ben.

Before it is all upon us (and again, this is a question I will be putting to TJ), can I ask everyone what their NY resolutions will be?

I will be switching to a healthier diet and getting to bed a lot earlier! And hopefully procrastinating less. Provided I can stop postponing the resolution. lol.

ooh. Edit. Forgot to answer your question, Rebecca! Well we will be at home watching the numerous firework displays around the house and listening to all the ships on the Mersey sounding their foghorns. May go down to watch the displays on the beach if we feel like it. Like last year. And hubby will be doing his usual 'first footing', ie walking through the house silently at midnight, one end to the other, with his piece of bread, bit of coal and coin, to ensure warmth, food and prosperity during 2009. Then it's champagne and nibbles, possibly with the neighbours. Good fun.

No Bud in my fridge either. I don't like beer at all.

I don't do much at all for New Years. New Years Eve is my mother's birthday so we celebrate that, but nothing else. Listen to the neighbors shoot off bottle rockets. New Year's day we have the traditional southern meal with black-eyed-peas (southerners think its good luck to eat them on New Years Day).

No resolutions. I don't do resolutions. :)

Are Bottle Rockets a Texan thing? I've only heard of them through the film Bottle Rockets - one of my top ten movies.

I'm not a big one for New Years - pubs too busy for my liking. Not sure what I'm doing yet, though I keep horses and as for the first time this year they're outside in a field rather than in stables I might end up visiting them late on just to make sure they're not spooked by fireworks. Talk about being over protective

I don't do NY resolutions either - as I know I've got zero chance of sticking to anything! But I am looking forward to what 2009 will bring :D :D Always start a new year looking forwards not back is my motto.

I don't think bottle rockets are a Texan thing. People all over the US can get them where they sell fireworks. They are illegal to shoot off in the city limits here, not that it matters to the fools that are our neighbors. They spend about 2 hours shooting off bottle rockets. I've never really understood the appeal as they are just noisy, like firecrackers. Its not like you get to see something pretty when they burst.

Hi all

Always have a quiet New Year probably just between Alex's, his sister's and our house like Christmas. It'll be nice to chill, today has been quite hectic. We were meant to go to the horse racing but it was cancelled due to the freezing weather so we ended up in Liverpool city centre shopping then eating gourmet burgers, with me, as usual, getting teased for being veggie and having a butternut squash burger. Honestly since I became veggie you'd swear I had two heads sometimes! I made the most of not driving for once and treated myself to a large glass of pinot grigio rose very nice! Oh and then we stopped at the casino for an hour, didn't win though.
No resolutions this year 'cos I know I won't stick to them but I am determined to eat a more healthy diet and exercise more so that this time next year hopefully I'll be loads more healthy, that's the theory anyway!

It will be a quiet New Years Eve for us, too. We go to my sisters, eat dinner, play some games and at midnight we drink some sparkling wine, watch the firework and go home. So, no big party, too!

I wish you all "Einen guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr"! Have fun whatever you do! :occasion-partyblower:

See you next year! :)

New Year's for me was a quiet one. After the visiting family members left earlier in the week (fun chaos!), it was nice to savor the quiet and chill out. I spent a good part of the Eve day fiddling around with the iPod nano I got for Christmas from my generous family, trying to decide what songs to load onto it ... because you know as a musician and an eclectic music collector there's no way I can fit all my CDs on that thing! Still, lots of fun to play with. I love me some techno gadgets. Heee.

Then I had dinner with my aunts and my grandmother, we played card games, they went to bed around 11:30, and I stayed up to see in the new year.

After midnight I also spent some time in reflection, and wrote a post for my LiveJournal. Steph, you may find it particularly interesting since I start out discussing my feelings about New Year's Resolutions.

Hint: I may do a bit of this. :angry-soapbox: Just my feelings on the matter; your own mileage may vary. *GRIN* Basically, I realize I've spent too much time this past year treating myself like crap. I'd rather not start off the new year by picking myself apart and listing things that are wrong with me, parts that need to be 'fixed' or 'corrected' in some way. I suppose it's all in how you look at the subject, but for me, I think resolutions can take a hike. I'd rather commit to positive validation (or -- heh -- should I say Validation?), of others and myself.

Therefore...

Thank you for being so lovely to me all year, for giving me a safe place to visit and chat and discuss TJ's work and all sorts of topics. You were a lifeline during an extremely rough year, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate it. You are all marvelous, and I love ya!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Hmm!
Well, that was thought provoking, Sherry, and I fully appreciate where you are coming from on that! I personally can say that I do look back on my achievements of the year and that my present job is giving me increasing satisfaction and confidence because it is where I want to be in my life.

I don't think of my resolutions as picking myself apart, although yes, you are right, there are things about myself I truly don't like!! I really do think of them as desirable and attainable goals. They are about challenging myself to be the best that I can, physically and mentally, so obviously I don't expect to stick to them rigidly, but I will feel happy if I can get a bit of the way there because some of them are about the way I relate to others. Like I fully kept the ones I had in the past about getting out more for quality time with my other half, and about making a proper effort to keep in touch with my friends. Those resulted notably in far more social and cultural outings/breaks from the stress of work and in a fantastic holiday where we travelled round to see all our ex-university friends. So that was very good for me!

Oddly, a silent wish I always have for myself is that I will be more positive and kind about myself (now that's a bit ironic from your angle I guess!). The way I see it, at least I have thought about it properly.

And another thing. Life would be depressing indeed if we thought of ourselves as failures whenever we don't quite measure up to some imaginary standard (that's how my husband suffered 3 episodes of depression). Just get back on the horse, it's an opportunity to have another go. Well, that's my take on it anyway.

That made for powerful reading Sherry and I have to say I agree with you - New Years Resolutions are not my cup of tea either.

I think most people are far too hard on themselves - beat themselves up about things they have no control over. Life can be pretty crappy and sometimes you've just got to sit back and think 'I did the best I could'.

I'm a big believer in fate and destiny - everything happens for a reason even if that reason isn't apparent at the time. Follow the little (and sometimes big) signposts that fate places in front of you and you'll get where you're supposed to be going. Wrong turns are inevitable but if you stay true in your heart you'll get back on the right path.

At the risk of getting even more esoteric I also believe in karma and if I do look back at 2008 that's the one thing I probably neglected the most. It's easy to get caught up in the little things, forget the bigger picture, forget that ultimately what matters is just being the best person you can and trying to pass that on to everyone you meet.

2009 looks like being a tough year for most people - financially at least - but if one good thing comes out of the credit crunch it'll be that people start to value non-material things again and that we lose this philosophy of greed that has grown and infiltrated society since the 1980's. If we can all start value the real things in life again I think the world might just end up a better and more balanced place.
