Bones 3.14 The Wannabe In The Weeds

Three sides up currently, but all of the same scene by the look of it (I've only read one). What sort of title is that? Aren't they getting a bit silly with the alliteration?
Anyway, this is about performers. So might we get singing? Someone get Eric up there onstage undercover (though Zach, I feel, might not be too keen on all that attention). Or TJ. Hey, he didn't make a bad job of 'I Feel Like a Woman'...

More sides now available. Sherry, Rebecca, you're gonna hate this one, there's actually an obsessive stalker character in it called 'Fat Pam' and much is made of her obesity and crush on Booth. Hilarious. Not. Nice to see one with creativity and performance in it, but really, what with Birimbau beng a Perfect Specimen, lots and lots of repellent obese people and even Bren being called a 'toothpick', aren't we making a bit much of appearance and stereotypes? come back subtlety, please!

A thought - slight spoiler

You people who have read the sides for 'Wannabe in the Weeds' - where do you think the story of Fat Pam is going? As a stalker, she is no doubt going to show up again and I do find that slightly creepy. Could be a background arc do you think, in the tradition of 'Misery'? Just thinking I don't want Booth and, by extension, our squints, being targeted by an obsessive lunatic...

I'm not keen on the stalker idea. it's been too overdone, to the point where it becomes a cliche! I know the writers want a storyline that runs for a few epsiodes, but there are ones already in place that they could work on. For example, actually get back to the Jack/Angela storyline which has been on the sidelines for a few weeks. And they have already done this, in season one with with Brennan's mini-stalker.

I've read the sides, and not keen, but it depends on how it is played out. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, I guess a procedural-type drama by its very nature is going to have people pursuing others in some way or another!

You're right actually. There are other storylines hanging in mid air which could be usefully wound up.

...till May at the last count. Aaaarghh! :? :(

Thanks for the heads up, Steph. And yes, I read those scenes with Pam and found them distasteful--particularly the scene where she's speaking defensively about her weight, yet at the same time eating from a bowl of candy on the table. Now, if that's not a stereotype, I don't know what is.

On a happier note, I will enjoy seeing Hodgins burst into the interrogation room with last minute evidence, much to Booth's chagrin!

This whole show is just getting ridiculous.
I've never wished for my favourite actor to leave a show, but please, for the love of almighty dieties, someone with powers kill off Hodgins so I can have an excuse to stop watching!

I'd really hate to see that scene, Callie! Or see the show go to that drastic a measure. :(

Must keep Hodgins.

How about instead if the writers get it together and quit focusing so much on people with weight issues in such an insensitive and cruel manner? Anyone who's ever struggled with their weight would never write that, not that way. Maybe once, with Howard Epps' mother, because they were trying to make a point about her entire personality and demeanor, and how she affected Howard and could have been one factor in the building of his psychotic behavior.

And I do understand that they try to put those words in Brennan's mouth, in the name of being funny, to demonstrate once again that she has not completely learned how to socialize; sometimes she says insensitive things. However, there's making a point, and then there's pounding it over people's heads in a way that gets derogatory.

I'm not asking them to become the poster children for A Very Special Episode about the horrors and challenges of being a woman or having weight issues (*groan*). I'm just asking that they think about what they present before they write it.

What concerns me most is that -- though obviously I don't have statistics -- there has got to be a large viewership of women watching Bones. To continually harp on weight or size, insult people who aren't stick-thin or keep bringing up how Bones is a toothpick... that is not good for women of any age to hear, especially young women.

I know, I shouldn't go on about this, but it happens to be a soapbox topic of mine -- I've seen too many people obsess and worry and berate themselves for their size when they're lovely and beautiful just as they are. In fact, I've been one of those people! It's unhealthy and defeating, and it keeps people from living their lives as fully and wonderfully as they could, because they're too worried or self-conscious about their bodies or how they look and how that measures up to the seemingly-skinny person standing next to them.

NO ONE is perfect. That word is impossible and unattainable. It should be about health and taking wonderful care of oneself and getting your body to be strong and flexible and in good shape, not about trying to meet some ideal that isn't realistic, plausible, safe or fair.

*pant, pant* Okay, end of lecture. *steps down from soapbox* I'll be quiet now. :D

Yeah, I knew it was a subject close to your heart! I think it was generous of you to allow an exception for Epps' mother, as personally I was getting a slightly skewed 'fat people are not good mothers' message simply because Brennan harped on her weight. Prior to these sides I was also annoyed by the unnecessary comments about the Breathless Woman in 'Mummy In The Maze'. She was such a peripheral character that it was entirely mischievous to use her in a negative way. She was breathless because she was scared and Brennan had no call to remark on her appearance.

Enough has been made of Brennan's lack of social panache. We get it, already. And you are quite correct I suspect in your surmise of the effect this consistent message could have on female viewers.

Callie, did you mean to put 'almighty dieties' or did you intend 'almighty deities'? If the former - kudos, that's very clever. If the latter - something Freudian creeping in there!

By the way, talking of deities, I note that Callieach is the name of a Celtic 'Bone Goddess'. Now that is very clever.

It's true. I've even thought about writing a book about the subject. Not in any sort of professional or expert point of view, obviously, for I am not a doctor or psychologist, but I wanted to write it from a woman's personalized perspective. I've got a ton of notes and thoughts jotted down; unfortunately, I'm struggling with how I want to assemble those thoughts and present them. Still a work in progress. Heh, me and the book. ;)

Exactly! Plus the fact that the actress playing the part was average in size, from what I recall. She was not hugely overweight in any way. To have that comment come from Brennan (or anyone, really) ticked me off when I watched it.
By the way, talking of deities, I note that Callieach is the name of a Celtic 'Bone Goddess'. Now that is very clever.
That is clever! Very cool, Callie. Hat's off to you. :D

First off all, kudos to Sinkwriter72 for her little rant up there. You have no idea how thrilled I am to be in the e-company of people who also feel strongly about the subject of a "perfect woman". Excelent role models, the lot of you are. ;)
Being not exactly a pixie myself, I know how angry I can get when a woman's size or figure is commented on negatively. It's disgusting, if you ask me. And while I admit that Epp's mother's size played a roll in the plot, I still think anyone would have been a little more sensitive than Brennan was. The writers tend to take her character to an irrational extreme.

1. Heh. I meant 'almighty deities,' actually. And... well... a friend pointed out the irony of a atheist-with-paganistic qualities saying something like 'For the love of God,' so I changed my ways.

2. Wow, I actually didn't know that. I picked Callieach for her relationship with winter and stones (it's a long story involving my curling team making me come up with our name for a bonspiel) and knowing she's also known as the 'Bone Goddess' is really neat.

Ohhh, Callie, I have not even begun to rant on that topic! LOL. I could say so much more... but I'll leave that for another time, perhaps on my LiveJournal when I'm ready, so as not to go completely off-topic in this thread. :D

But sincerely, thank you. I'm very glad to hear you lovely women feel the same. I think so much of the world's view (especially the media's view) can be negative and unduly harsh in this regard; therefore, it's incredibly important to look positively upon ourselves and each other (men as well as women, for that matter). Not always an easy thing, but important nonetheless.

Just getting this topic set up so we have somewhere to chat tonight. I'm hoping I'll be home in time to watch the show, after dealing with all sorts of 'isn't life hysterically funny and ironic?' stuff all day. But if something happens with the timing (and let's face it, the timing in my life is very messed up right now), I may have to download the ep and respond about it at another time.

Here's hoping I'll be able to do it all tonight, because last week chatting about the episode was so much fun, people! We had some good discussions going. Everybody, feel free to join in! I look forward to hearing your thoughts. :D

(But please don't talk spoilers for this episode, not in this thread anyway, not until after the ep has aired tonight. Some of us don't want to know what happens ahead of time.)

Hi everybody!! Am I the first one here? Is it okay to talk "spoilers" now, since the episode has technically aired?? I do hope so ... and if not, please don't read on...

What did you guys all think of tonight's offering?? I actually enjoyed it! Shocker, I know. And for an episode that pretty much had zero Jack/Angela goodness, it did have some other cute moments. Who knew Eric Millegan had such pipes? Wow. Truly amazing. And Emily Deschanel is nothing to laugh at either ... that girl can sing!m I had heard she would be singing, but not using her voice, and making Brennan "unable to sing". However, if that was an inability to sing, then wow ... I really, really suck - because I am nowhere near that good!

The storyline was decent ... I had a moment of guessing the right killer, but there were honestly so many people thrown into the mix that I got caught up and wasn't certain either way. I am definitely not an American Idol fan, so I wasn't entirely impressed with the the singing star, but still ... it was decent.

Jack/Angela ... guys, nothing. Maybe a few scenes with them standing in close proximity of each other, but that was all. No hint of problems at ALL. Unless I'm missing something, and guys - please feel free to correct me if I did miss something. (If any of you watch House as well, you'll forgive me for being kind of scatter brained and fried right now!).

I won't ramble on too much, so you guys have some room to discuss too, but ... overall, what did you think??

I thought tonights episode was really good!!! I liked all of the singing that went on in it. Especially Emily. I didn't know she could sing. As for Zach, I knew he has some pretty mad vocals. Heres a video of him singing the national anthem at a basketball game. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqObVLGRl2M (i don't know how to do the hyperlink thingy :D )You gotta skip to like 0:40 to actually see him. He's got the beard going and everything!...heh.

Geez. That Pam lady freaked me out. That was totally a shocker when she [accidentally] shot booth. I thought she was going to shoot herself. Total cliffhanger (Just like House, for any house fans out there. Tonights episode...greattt). I totally feel for Booth though. It made me feel....Idk...when he sacrificed himself for Brennen. Sad. And happy. And...emotional. =/ What if that kind of stuff happened with Hodgins and Angela.....Imagine that...

Sweets::: Yea i know i'm like the only one here who doesn't mind Sweets, but i thought that he didn't intrude in the episode much. Well maybe a couple of scenes. But he's becoming a regular character now so i guess that is whats expected. But I don't know. I actually like Sweet, besides the fact the squints aren't getting as much screen time. =/.

Jack/Angela::: There were absolutely no jack and angela scenes. =( But there were a couple of Jack scenes. I especially loved it when he barged in the middle of Booth's interrogation. Everything about it. It reminded me of some of the scenes back in season 2. Where he would get all excited about something totally...unexciting. I love the confidence. lol. Oh, and of course i loved the outfit. For once it was nice to see him wearing something other than that lab coat. something more laid back and casual. Thats the Hodgins i want to see more of. It seems like he's getting so little screen time, that every time he comes on screen i savor every second, and every expression. Especially his smile. :D

Well I will come back to elaborate when some of you more intelligent...elaborators (heh) put in some insight about the episode.

Hmm... I think I need to let this episode simmer a bit before I respond fully. I'm not sure how I feel about it just yet. The final moments  were exciting, without a doubt, and I enjoyed hearing Eric and Emily sing. But the rest of it, I need to ponder a bit more.

Side note: did anyone wonder when Lorne was going to come in and start singing "Lady Marmalade"? Or if David would sing Barry Manilow tunes? (You have to be an Angel fan to know what I mean. *GRIN* Makes me want to watch my DVDs. It's been a while, because I've been so focused on David as Booth these days. It's impressive that he's managed to make me see him as someone other than Angel or Angelus. I like that. Kudos, Boreanaz! Hee.) ;)

P.S. Until I started watching tonight, I didn't realize this was the 'Fat Pam' episode we'd previously discussed in one of the spoiler threads. I was mentally unprepared for that, so I may have some bristling comments about this show's repeated issue with weight. We'll see. Like I said, I have to digest it for a bit. See what ruminates overnight. I'll be back. :D

Additional P.S. for Kimber. I don't always remember to watch House but I did happen to see tonight's ep. Trippy! I can see why your brain feels fried! That was intense. Certainly held my attention as I tried to figure out what the hell happened.

I liked it, yeeees I liked it.

Totally shocked in the end, although I knew what was happening but those 3 final minutes were really intense. There's no need to say that I was yelling for brennan to say "don't leave me BOOTH!!" and a "Bones, I love you" X) and dead booth. But of course none of that happened and I'll just have to keep on dreaming, in this case. LOOOOOOVED emily and eric's singing, I previously heard Eric singing so I knew how he would sound but with Emily was different because I know we heard her in keep on trying but that was nothing compared with this. They both can sing their lungs out.

About Hodgins, I enjoy those times when he gets to go out of the lab and like in this episode interact with Booth ... when he tries to sit on the table in the interrogation room and Booth stops him, and then he grabs the pen and starts explaining very very focused in what he's saying...haaha. Those times are good ones.

and I love internet for giving me the opportunity of downloading the episode 35 minutes after is finished on the US. :D now I can't wait for next monday.

It simply boggles my mind that as well as the show has done in hiring actors with disabilities and their sensitivity on the issues around that, you'd think they'd be equally balanced in representing heavy people. Granted, there have been two weightier women in positions of positive influence -- out of 3+ seasons of the show (oh, how worthy of praise ) -- but in anywhere but Hollywood those actors would not have been considered 'fat.'

But this is the second woman we've seen as 'the heavy' -- and it pisses me off.

Why can't Bones take a hint from the ultimate fluffy 'comic book' show, CSI: Miami? I recently saw an episode where a handsome cop was being stalked by an absolutely perfect woman who had incredible style and a shitload of money. She shot at him, too.

I don't watch CSI: Miami for the plot: I watch for the pretty colors and the pretty people and the wild funny that is Horatio and his shades. Even they managed to do better on this issue, which I never would have expected in a million years.

As for the rest of the episode? I'm gonna need more coffee, and quite possibly a mood leveler.

"Oh Mandy ... you came and you gave without taking. But I sent you away, Oh Mandy..." LOL. Too funny. I actually now own the first two seasons of Angel, and I think for some reason I am appreciating it much more this second time 'round! Lorne is awesome, and he could definitely belt a tune. So could Lawyer Lindsay ... maybe they should have made guest appearances!

Also - hi bonesaddict11! House! Wow. For me I'm finding that airing it after Bones is quite a disadvantage to Bones, because House always seems more interesting and much more dramatic, so by the time it ends, I've forgotten what's gone on with Bones! But yes ... last night's episode ... WOW. On so many levels.

And I agree that the Jack scenes were great, too! Yes, no Jack/Angela, and that's sad ... but Jack was on his game in this ep! I absolutely adored when he broke into the interrogation room! Hilarious. And also his scenes with Zack, which always entertain me.

Edit: Since I've had time to sit and stew on the episode and its events, a few things have come to mind. The most important is this: I know shows like to put their main characters in grave danger, I get it. But in the case of Booth being shot, and the preview for next week alluding that he could DIE ... that's just a bit irrational. Is there really any chance that Booth won't make it? No, probably not. The writers would be stupid and thoughtless to kill him off. They'd also lose most of their giggly fangirly fanbase.

I like it when shows make the "potential death" a character that you believe actually could die. Like on Criminal Minds, for anyone who watches, when Garcia was shot and her life hung in the balance. Or even with House, and the potential for Amber to not make it. I'm not saying that Booth's being shot wasn't shocking and dramatic (for someone unspoiled like myself, at least), but I think it's pretty obvious that he's going to be joining us in S4.

*breathes deeply*

Let's just call this post Better Living Through Chemistry

Okay, I've had another pot of Seattle's Best, but alas, there are no mood stabilizers to be found (other than browsing TJ's gallery photos).

For me, this show was bad coffee weak. It's getting to the point where I need to artifically alter my consciousness to forget the Bones of Season one and half of Season two so I can enjoy the current episodes. If the show stays on the air another couple of years it's gonna get expensive, and I can't take the cost of acid off my taxes.

If you're jonesing for a flashback episode where Jack makes homemade LSD, raise your hand! *waves frenetically*

~~spontaneous scene break~~

Green Goddess.

They named Jack’s remarkably subtle and effective LSD after the tiny glyph Cherry had drawn of a female figure holding a crescent moon over her head. She carved the design into a potato and used food coloring to stamp the design on the blotter paper.

She passed on her own custom-painted hit, preferring to smoke some weed and go up to bed. “Someone’s got to be straight in case it gets freaky,” she told them. “My turn will come.”

What Jack remembers most is watching his world from a great distance and feeling at one with the stars in the sky. Safe. Whole. Slightly leaky.

~~end spontaneous scene break~~

TJ was wonderful, as always, and Eric and Emily were delightful.

Overall, last night's episode left me feeling like I'd eaten a handful of sugar cubes. And not the freaky-deaky kind. :(

Oh Mandy! hahahaha I started watching Angel a few weeks ago and I'm entering into s2...I know, I'm a little bit slow with the process but that's because I'm also watching some others shows at the time. I'm waiting to see that scene! I saw it on YouTube but it's not the same as in the whole episode, but I already been through his ... 'dance' ? that was funny too.

And regarding the bones episode I don't think Booth's going to die because....bones without booth is...I mean...there would be no show :P let's see what's to come next Monday. How they are going to manage this situation?
