Two roads diverged in a wood, and I --
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Hi Sherry.

Hugs. Many many hugs.

Earlier this year, I voluntarily left a full-time, high-paying job. Why? Because two students were killed. Students I knew, kids I cared about.

Last year, I thought teaching in inner-city schools was my next step--I was an experienced teacher in a high-need area (math) who could readily handle discipline issues. Student-student and student-teacher curse-word-filled disagreements, I handled it. Fights broke out, I handled it. Weapons confiscated, I handled it. But then two kids killed...

So I left. And for the next couple of months, I lay in bed or sat on the couch and literally pondered the meaning of life and my role in it. Maybe after all these years, I wasn't cut out for teaching. Maybe I didn't want the daily stress anymore. Maybe I couldn't handle things like I used to think I could.

For a while, I didn't even look for a job. When I finally did start to look, I looked for secretarial jobs--I'd make an awesome secretary, and I'd love it--but my resume with a ton of teaching degrees and experience apparently didn't stand out in the right way with secretary employers. Or, by the time I'd call about a job ad, the job would be gone.

In one of my searches, I came across an ad for full-time employment at McDonald's. Now, I had worked at McDonald's for four-and-a-half years to put myself through undergrad. I thought, I could do this, and maybe enter as management, to make more money! And that's exactly what I did.

I finished the rest of last school year working for McDonald's to pay the bills. To me, a wonderful low-stress job. Hard work and long hours, mind you, but low-stress compared to students dying and worrying about the next deadly incident. Then over the summer, a former college job offerred me a summer course to teach, then a few courses for the fall term. Then just before the fall term began, another branch campus had a full-time job opening, and I landed it.

I still work for McDonald's, on weekends. I am grateful for the opportunity the owner gave me, to let me start at the much higher management pay rate in this tough economic time. So I'm going to keep that job, even though I landed a different, higher-paying, in my field, full-time one.

So, somewhere in here, I'm trying to tell you that the job you want is out there for you. It may take you first accepting a job you don't necessarily want. Remember--those jobs help pay bills. Those jobs show others that you are "gainfully employed." Those jobs provide you time to continue looking for your dream job. They also help keep your mind off being unemployed, and all the emotions that go along with that.

Before I forget, check out www.demandstudios.com. It's a freelance writer site that I applied to (and was accepted to) a while ago. You can choose your writing jobs and you get paid by the job. You can work from your home computer and get paid via PayPal. Maybe you'd like this.

And I quoted what I did because I love that part of Frost's work. Wonderful choice.

Take care, and more hugs,
Liz

I have much to say to you wonderful people who responded to my emotional post, but currently this evening the cold I'd been trying to keep from attacking me seems to be gaining ground and I feel very much under the weather. :sad-fever: I'm going to bed early (this is huge for me). But for now I just want to thank you very humbly for your stories and encouragement and support. You are all very lovely and kind, and you gave me much food for thought.

Group hug! :romance-grouphug:

I know a bit how you feel, Sherry! I want to do something else, something meaningful, something I actually like. But, well, I'm a hamster, too. :?

Lots of hugs to you, Sherry! :romance-smileyheart:

Wow, okay, I'm here due to a nudge from Steph.

I'm Elle, 23. I just graduated with my B.A. in Sociology with a pre-law focus; I'm taking a year or so off to work, spend time with my family (one relative is terminally ill and another just passed away a few weeks ago - take advantage of the time while you've got it, I suppose), and parent before I head off to law school to pursue a career in family practice.

In response to Steph's question regarding rodents - I'm not exactly certain how I feel at the time. I love my job working currently as a paralegal's assistant, because it's helping me get a great understanding of the courtroom and legal procedures and techniques that I wouldn't necessarily get from a classroom experience. That being said, if I were given the opportunity to keep law as a hobby (guardian ad litem, perhaps?) and to be able to stay at home, keep house for my husband, and have a ton of awesome kids (and homeschool them)? I'd jump at that chance. Law is my career and knowledge passion. Kids - especially the one I have now - trump that, easily. (I'd say that a husband would, too, but I don't have personal experience with that yet.)

Pirate - my son. I've raised him on my own since he was four months old. He's now nearly four years and he is... awesome. I think every parent says that about their child, but I really got lucky. He's empathetic, smart (reprogrammed my DVD player at 18 months old, eek!), precocious, and has a memory like a bear trap. It's been a really incredible experience for me, and it's made me grow up tremendously. He was actually the catalyst for my desire to pursue law.

tl;dr because I had to play with my course schedule so I could remain at home with him when he was born, I ended up taking a law class to fulfill a credit requirement. Fell in love with the subject, hit the ground running, and haven't stopped since.

So I suppose I could I could say that I'm not a rodent... I'm a virus. I see what I need to do to get what I want or what I need, or what my son wants or needs, and I do what's necessary to pursue that. I've always been that way. I'm the oldest of four kids, Type A personality, very much a leader and a take-charge-and-get-it-done kind of person. If there's something I want to learn, I pursue it and I learn it. (I taught myself to knit - I'm actually in charge of a Bones-themed Knit-A-Long on a knitting forum, where we all knit the same project/s over the course of Season 6.) Every other woman in my family, save my mother, works in the medical profession. Me? I had to be different and pursue both an education and a career in law.

As far as hobbies go - I love music, although I've never been to a ticketed concert. Ever. My iPod is chock-full of music that most people wouldn't recognize (although it made me smile to see TJ answering a question regarding music with the names of bands I enjoy and songs I love - it's rare to find someone with a similar taste in music to mine!). I've been knitting for nearly three years and surfing (on waves, on the ocean) since I was about 12. (Received my own surfboard for my 8th grade graduation gift, when I was 13.) I took a film production class during my first year of college and was a part of the film club that year, and I've been making my own short films ever since. I hate the cold. I'm a vegetarian and working toward being a food-vegan, because (1) I feel healthier when I avoid animal by/products and (2) I won't stop knitting or spinning with animal fibers, so I won't be a "real" vegan. I have no issues with meat except that it doesn't seem to like me very much. :( Besides Bones, I keep up with LOST and CSI:NY - I don't have TV, so it's Netflix/DVDs/network sites for me.

Pirate's name admittedly isn't really Pirate. It developed because his name - one I'd loved for years, and the only one that reached mutual agreement - ended up being amazingly popular. I love his legal name, but if I called his first name aloud, maybe six kids would answer. For that reason, and due to his personality as a newborn, he's been "Pirate" ever since. The only people who call him by his legal name are family members who think that "Pirate" is a stupid name. Oh, well. Look! This is me not caring!

Last but not least - if you couldn't tell from my signature, RED SOX NATION. I was born and raised about 30-45 minutes away from Boston proper, and, while I've lived in Portland, ME, Oklahoma City, OK, and Orlando, FL (I worked at Disney!), I always end up returning home. I'm an avid baseball fan and I LOVE going to games; I was raised with baseball in my home and I had a Carl Yastrzemski pennant in my room when I was three. The only thing I hate about living here is the weather. Too cold. Much too cold.

It's lovely to meet all of you, and thank-you to everyone for being so welcoming.

 Wooow

It's been a while since I came here to wrote some little pieces of my life :D

First of all : welcome new members whom I didn't have the chance to chat with lately :-)

Sherry : WOW! What could I say more??? I'm just a hamster eating waffles and wondering why there's no exit in my wheel... LOL As far as I have waffles!
Hope you are feeling a little better and please, come and chat with us more often!!!

About my long silent time: I still haven't paid my bill for internet, hopefully will do it in a few days and will be ready for our next amazing chat (^_^) Even though I'm working on this sunday, I think I'll be back home on time to say hi and ask my qustion (I think noone has asked it so far, so I hope none of you will have the same than me!!! :D)

For the rest, well, a lot... errr... no, let's be really true : ALL of my applications for work have been rejected... So I have a huge feeling of being useless and somehow unable to work in anything according to what's happening... There's something I don't understand, I have probably missed something and I will have to clear this as soon as possible (investigation on its way!)
My current contract will last until the end of january... And I just need to find another one then... Oh well, I know my actual boss loves my work and will tell it to my temporary agency so I will have good recommandations, so I think they will find me some work pretty fast, it's just annoying to see that all my applications are rejected... Maybe it's the picture... I shouldn't add it to my resume (even though it's recommanded in France...)

Oh, well, whatever! I'm going to see the ocean this weekend, so it's going to be a wonderful moment to clear my mind and breath!! With all the wind we'll have, it's going to be fun!!! Photos will follow, be sure about it!!! :D

Have fuuuuun sweet wonderful people of TJThyne.com (^_^)

Hugs!!!

A hat and vest, and (in another photo)... a scarf! :text-woo:

You know how much I love those scarves and hats. Heeheeee.

Looking good, TJ, looking good.

I'm part of the Bones Fans group on probably the biggest fiber arts community online, and (I might have said so above?) I'm in charge of what's called a Knit-Along. This specific one, we assigned each Bones character a knitting pattern (Jack's is called "Hat for Hodgins" - we also have "Socks for Seeley") and we're working our way through those as we keep up with Season 6.

So, uh, if TJ likes scarves (or toque-hats)... I know an entire group of women (no male knitters yet!) who'd jump on the chance to spread the handknit love.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this but just in case, I must inform you all TJ has specifically asked that people NOT send him gifts. He really would prefer people not, and if they want to do something just donate to a favorite charity. And if that isn't what you meant, well carry on!! HEE (but the gift thing can be stored for future reference HAHAHAHAHA)

I know that the group I mentioned had done something similar prior to my involvement with sending DB handknit socks due to Booth's crazy-sock-obsession, and it didn't go over well. It's usually not a good idea, I've found - at least, not unsolicited! - but trend-starting is ALWAYS awesome. (And I think we might add scarves to the list of things to do...)

Okay Elle. Wasn't sure so wanted to put that out there. LOL

Something funny from today at school:

Guy sits behind me in my math class, the desk is a desk for a left handed person. Second guy comes in and sits next to him and asks, are you left handed or right handed, and first guy says right handed but he doesn't mind that desk. Second guy says to first guy "Are you ambidextrous?" and first guy says...sounded scared and confused "I don't know. I hope not" BAHAHAHAHAHAHA <---which is exactly what I did at that point. :D :D :D

Well, they are chairs with an L-shaped desk attached....like this Image
That is a right handed desk, a left handed one would have the support on the LEFT side and the opening to sit on the right. Our desks don't look that good (they are mostly plastic) and don't fold up but the open one looks basically like what we sit in for most classes. Make sense?

Is it Sam by chance? LOL. I saw a kid on an EpiPen commercial with that name and thought, I haven't heard it in a while, I like that. So did everyone else aparently! Pirate is very cool nickname though, love it.

And Ali beat me to the new avatar pic, so had to "settle" for this one.

Thanks! And nope, not Sam - although he has both an aunt AND an uncle called Sam (Samantha/Samuel) which makes me very, very, VERY glad that the name didn't get final approval.

Incidentally, the other name we'd liked was Jack - and Sebastian had also been thrown into the ring as a name idea. (He ended up an 'Aidan,' actually... see what I mean as WAY too popular? Ugh!)
