Ooo. sounds fun.

There were a few of these conventions for all of these "horror" shows that i heard about. i really wanted to go because the actors from supernatural were gonna be there. but of course its in a different state...and im still in school. But one of my friends got a picture with sam and dean from supernatural!! if any of you are familiar with them. ahh i was soooo jealous.

I think they should have a convention for Bones. or better yet, a convention for all FOX tv shows. haha i would sooo be there. even if i had to skip school and run away. anything to get a picture with the cast of Bones, House, and Prison Break.

The forums seem to be quite deserted this past week...everyone still there?
School's almost out

I'm here, checking in daily, but don't always post. I guess many of us are feeling a little stressed as we face the end of a school year--some of us as teachers, some of us as students. Lots going on!

What's this 'end of year' stuff? We're still in till 10th July, many pastoral problems have arisen recently, I am trying to help our Head-of-Dept-to-be put together a workable timetable for next year's altered curriculum, and coming up I have a solid week of recording oral tests to be sent off and marked by the exam board. I'm like an elastic band stretched to the limit, people keep asking me to do things and I am at the point of telling them to get the **** off my case. Which is not like me.

Dohee, good news; son no.2 has got back on the horse in record time and has helped his team win a League and Cup double. Both the deciding matches went to penalties and he saved 2 penalties in each. We are all ridiculously proud of him. :D

That´s good news, Steph! Really happy for you and your son!

Just came back from the movies and thought I drop by for a minute! Still excited about the movie so I can´t sleep! That´s why I am here so late! A friend of me and I watched IRON MAN! WOW, so great! LOVE ROBERT DOWNEY JR.! Always did! He is such a great actor! :) The movie was really great! Lots of action, very funny and a bit social criticism. And we all need a hero! :)

It was a long night, because I had to tell my friend all about FedCon in Bonn and - of course - show her the pictures. It was so great to see Brent Spiner and Bruce Boxleitner again. The other guests were great, too! Well, I told you that already! :)
A BONES Con would be great! Maybe together with HOUSE and CSI! OK, PRISON BREAK, too! Then my friend will definitely be there, too. She loves Wentworth and PRISON BREAK!

Good night! :)

Its not the end of the year for me as far as school goes but it is coming on finals week. Two finals Monday and one next Saturday, then I get a two week break before I start my summer class (Calculus II). Anyway, thats why I haven't been here a lot. Besides the fact that our ISP is horrible and my broadband modem keeps going out! So we'll be switching providers soon.

Steph, so glad to hear about your son. Glad he is doing well and saved the day (or the game at least ;))

Simone, AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH  you met Bruce Boxleitner! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Ok. Do you get it that I like him and I'm so jealous? I have to admit as a teen I had a schoolgirl crush on him as Scarecrow. I outgrew that but I also ABSOLUTELY LOVE Babylon 5, so the fact that you saw him and Peter Jurasik is sooooooo great. Would you mind sharing the photo? If you don't want to put it out on the board maybe you could pm me? I'd love to see it. I've never been to a CON though, never been near one as far as I know.

Ok. Thats it for me, I have lots of stuff to get studying. Hope every one is doing well. :)

Sharon

Wow. I am genuinely impressed. Two penalty kicks? That is like super impossible. You know, good players are supposed to make like 80% of all penalty kicks. or something crazy like that. your son must be incredibly good. Congrats!

And for me, school ends in...about...I'm gonna have to say...16 days. And things have been reallly stressful. So don't be surprised to feel an absense from the boards these next few weeks.

Yeah Dohee, so great! Wanna see it again and again! :) We watched the bonus scene at the end just by accident. It was late and first we wanted to leave, but we stayed because the music was great. Glad we did! :D

Take care!

Sherry, what about your flat? Did you keep it? Have you found a job yet? I read (on myspace?) that you had to make some difficult decisions lately?

Sorry, hope it's not to nosy! Just share if you like to!

Good night to you all!

Oh Simone...

First off, it's great to hear from you! I've missed your smiling words around here.

As for the rest of your questions, no, they're not nosy, but thanks for being so sweet and respectful about it.

Let's see. To quote The Princess Bride: "Let me explain. (pause) No, there is too much. Let me sum up."

1. I have not found a job yet. At the risk of repeating myself (and I sincerely apologize to those of you who have heard this already), I feel like I'm on a roller-coaster ride of emotions. One week, I'll feel very focused and positive, applying for a bunch of jobs, getting a lot done. The next week, I feel almost completely deflated and discouraged, because I'm not getting ANY calls. And in talking to a lot of people out there who are also looking for jobs, it sounds like they're going through the same thing right now. The economy is terrible, most companies are just ... not hiring right now. They're trying to cut back, cut costs, do whatever they can to keep afloat. I've also found that oftentimes the jobs that are listed are so specific, I'm either over- or under-qualified or just not right for the positions. But what is really frustrating is not getting any response whatsoever. If they would just tell me that it's not me, or that it's my resume (something tangible I can adjust, you know?), or that it's something else, that they just got too many other applicants, or they decided not to fill the position after all, or tell me something, I'd feel a lot better. But to not hear anything or even get a phone call or an interview (with anyone other than temp agencies who don't follow up with any job possibilities), it just makes me feel so invisible and pointless sometimes.

2. Another fun tidbit: On Sunday night I dropped off my car at a repair shop, for them to do some maintenance on it, to check out some things I thought needed attention. Monday morning they called to tell me about the $1200 worth of work that would be required (I had them do about $860 of it, and am waiting on the rest because it's not crucial yet). And then they informed me that when they took my car out to test it, another car HIT IT. :( So I'm currently dealing with police reports and insurance from the guy who hit my car and the repair shop guy who was driving my car, all while I'm also trying to fit in packing up my apartment and looking for more job possibilities, and everything else that comes with everyday life 'stuff.' As you can imagine, it's a touch overwhelming. Just a touch.

3. Because of the no-job situation, I have to give up my apartment. That was one of the tough decisions. My lease is up in two weeks, so May 30 and 31 I'll be moving the majority of my stuff into storage. Then I'll be staying at the home my grandmother and two of my aunts share. They've been kind enough to 'take me in' while I continue to look for a job in the surrounding areas. But if I still don't have a good job in another six months (please let that not be the case), I'm going to have to reassess. Maybe think about moving elsewhere, or -- *big groan* -- move back home with my parents and search for work in my hometown.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with my hometown, I love it for several reasons... it's just that the thought of moving back there at this time in my life feels like this huge step backwards. It would be different if I were moving there for a specific reason, something positive, something meaningful, but to leave this area, leave all my friends, leave the environment I've gotten to know and love, and go somewhere else where nothing is stable, and everything feels uncertain and lonely and not right for me ... well, to be blunt, the very thought sucks.

However... even though I'm going to be living out of boxes and I know my grandma's home is not really my home and I cannot truly 'nest' there, I'm trying my hardest to stay as positive as possible. It is NOT easy, and the closer I get to moving, the more anxiety I feel. But what else can I do? That's life. Sometimes it sucks. I continue to breathe in and out, and try to handle things the best I can.

And honestly, every time I feel the least bit frustrated, something happens to remind me that I don't have it as bad as I could, so I should swallow hard and count my blessings. An acquaintance friend just broke her foot. My good friend Amanda lost a dear friend last week. And my best friend Todd just found out his father has cancer.

So really, (please pardon my language) what the F*%# do I have to complain about? Losing a job? Dealing with a car accident when I wasn't even in the car? Car repairs? Apartment issues? Sometimes I think I should just shut up because in the broad scheme of things, while my stuff is frustrating, it's still trivial frustration in comparison to others' issues and struggles.

Okay, that was not particularly 'summary.' But it was an edited version of what I'm currently going through, so it's the best I can do. *wry smile*

Sorry you asked, Simone? :D

Sherry, I have already picked up most of this on LJ and have been meaning to get in touch, but my time is nearly all spoken for at the moment, even now at the weekend, with work and other commitments. I promise I'll get back to you and answer you in the detail you deserve. Rest assured that I am so very sorry and I'm thinking of you. <<hug>>

Sherry! You know already what I think, so I'll just wish you the best with those car problems (speaking of which my mom's car broke in the middle of a totally crowded street the other day and let's just say that we dont have the money right now to get it fixed so I'm with you :) ) and as you said it, at least you are healthy, you have a family to count on and who's willing to give you shelter and this problems aren't the end of the world if you think it twice. Which of course doesn't make them less important. Better times will come, I'm sure of that, in the mean time you can come here and rant about it all you want because we're going to read you (i cannot say listen to you) and support you as far as we can. ;)

*hugs*

Thank you all for the grounding, comforting thoughts. xoxoo

Just got home from visiting with dear friends in the city (that would be Chicago). Popped online to send my friend an email message that I got home safely, and noticed I'd gotten an alert that someone just posted a message on TJ's site. So I thought to myself, who on earth is up in the middle of the night (it's currently 3:30 AM here)??

Silly me. It was Steph, who is what, six or seven hours ahead of me? So it's daylight time for you, right? Funny. :D

So... Good morning, Steph! Annnnd I'm going to bed now. Have a magnificent day!

*hugs Sherry* I'm sorry I missed you last week-end, but I had to work at ACEN. One of these days I will get you over to my place. Once I have a new place that isn't falling down around my ears, anyway.

As the total n00b around here, here's a stupidly lengthy bio: born and raised in Chicago to American mother and British father, but I've lived all over, and always come back here because it's my heart's home. Also, I don't know how to drive a car. So Chicago is perfect for me.

I work as a web designer/graphic designer at my day job, and do wee tiny bits of journalism now and then (mostly then--I think my last work in print was a cover story for Titan's Angel magazine story back in 2004 ). Tho I'm working on a book for Mad Norwegian press called _Chicks Dig Time Lords_ and occasionally contribute Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers and Jem pieces to cereal:geek magazine in the UK. Cartoons fo the 1980s are my not-so-seekrit-shame/guilty pleasure.

I'm an absolute geek, through and through. I'll be 35 this year, and grew up with telly and comic books and cartoons, and masses and masses of books. 9 free-standing bookcases in my current digs, and incapable of passing up a second-hand bookshop if I pass one. Other TV shows I love are "Doctor Who", both Old Skool and NuWho. It's my only real active fandom, in that I go to conventions, and have met a lot of my really wonderful friends the last 4 years thanks to attending Gally in LA and working at Chicago TARDIS. I also have a desperate love of "Wire in The Blood" which is really the only other procedural I watch. I was mercifully spared Robson Green's singing career, and therefore refused to be shamed by my love. It helps that I think the first thing I ever saw him in was "Touching Evil", and that thanks to falling madly in love with Nicola Walker in "Spooks". I want to be Ruth Evershed when I grow up.

I tried reading the Val McDermid Tony Hill mysteries, but I think I'm hopeless as I much rpefer the ITV versions fo Tony and Carol to the actual novels. My taste in mysteries tends to be either hard-boiled noir (Chandler, Hammett, Cain, etc.) or drawing room (Margery Allingham's Campion series mostly--tho I've given the Maisie Dobbs mysteries a go, that was mostly due to my absolute love of the Inter-War period). And lately a friend turned me on to Cabot's Heather Wells mysteries. They crack my shit up, and I can't wait for the next book. The rest of the time, I read a lot of YA horror, urban fantasy (mostly Gaiman, de Lint, adn anythigne dited by Terry Windling), pTerry, short stories, fairy tales and folklore, and gobs and gobs of non-fiction.

I have a strange obsession with WWII-era espionage, and the OSS in particular. And there was a brief moment two years ago when I really genuinely believed I was going to write POTC fan fiction about Norrington, and as a result briefly became obsessed with the 18th century British navy. It resulted in no fiction, but two shelves of Hornblower and Aubrey & Maturin, and way too much non-fiction about 18th century colonial Jamaica, and the Georgian navy.

Erm... that's actually a really common model for me and books. I've been writing fan fiction since I was a kid, and started publishing 'zines at uni in the early 1990s. I had a column on fandom and the mechanics of writing at Fanfiction.net back in the day (I write under the name "LJC" cos it dates back to a college Usenet nick), and learnt way too much Mandarin (including all the HTML you need to include hanyu pinyin in your fic) when I spent a year writing Firefly stories, ebfore the BDM.

I tend to spend months and months researching when I write, because it's just how I'm wired. I wrote a "Gosford Park" story as a yuletide pressie for someone on my LJ friends-list, and ended up acquiring three more shelves of research--this time biographies of Ivor Novello, Eddie Marsh, Pat Barker's _Regeneration_ trilogy, and every book I could find on life in service from Victorian times up through the 1960s, and social histories of the inter-war period. Oh! And there's a fantastic Welsh play called "Inside Out" about Ivor Novello's time in prison during WWII that I never would have found and read, so I count it all totally worth it.

Still single (gosh, is it any wonder why??), and but for now, living on my own, mortgage and all. Very every close with my family, who live in Florida. My mum's a former Special Ed. inner-city teacher, and artist. My sister Deirdre is a genius university lecturer with a post-grad degree in History, and Poppy hasn't retired yet. He does a lot of travel industry consulting, having met my mum in 1967 when he was a tour escort and she was an American in Europe for the first time. It was all very "If It's Tuesday, It Must be Belgium". They were married all of two months later, and moved to the States in '69.

ETA: SO much for a "brief" bio. Wow. I need to shut up now. You guys need to tell me to shut up! I talk too much. Bith IRL, and online. *facepalms*

But I'm really enjoying reading all the threads on the board, and diving head-first into Bones fandom.

Wow, Tara, I think I've learned more about you by your 'brief bio' here than I've had a chance to converse with you about in so freaking long.

I'm still chuckling, but that's because I'm so happy there's now another person who talks as much (if not more) than me! Excellent...

For all of you who are just meeting Tara, she's being far too modest. She's a talented writer with a brilliant mind. Encyclopedic, really. Her writing lesson pieces are worth reading, so helpful. There are still some Firefly stories she wrote that stick with me to this day. I also recall loving her take on Due South -- Tara, do you have that one on your site anymore?

At any rate, I highly recommend you all give her stuff a good long glance. (By the way, Tara, I still owe you more feedback on your stories -- I really need to get my head back together so I can delve deep and read everything on your site. You have my solemn vow.)

P.S. Again, sorry we missed you! It was good conversation, lots of laughs, and as always, very good eats. "And I he-elped!" ;)

And I will never, ever tell you to shut up. :D
