Alan, I've been so rude. I'm the moderator and I haven't said hi. *cyberwave* It's great to have you here, and I am glad you got an instant response to your enquiry. TJ really cares about his fans - he has been on this site to talk to us - and I am sure you will get that autograph as soon as he can manage. Keep posting, it's interesting to know about you. Get on the 'Bones' forum too, to comment on episodes. That's good fun. When I have more time I will scoot up there and do some reviewing. It'll be an excellent way to pass the time till the new series comes to our screens. See you around!

And Marie, hi. so great to know you too! I've actually already answered your post up on the sofa, so I'm not going to go into massive detail here, but it has been amazing to read all about you and I hope you will forgive me for my belated WELCOME!

Hi Marie! Welcome! Thanks for the detailed introduction. ;) I must admit I haven't read it all. It's late here in Germany and I am a bit tired.

Hope you like it here!

You're forgiven :D

Marie,

I thought I could talk about myself a lot but you have just proved me wrong! Wow!!! I'll get around to reading it all sooner or later. Seems we have something in common. I also married my best friend (spoke on the net for ages - met her once - stayed at hers for a week a month later and proposed a day before her birthday (there is more to why I proposed before and not on her birthday). We are about to have our 3rd child and I'm busy doing a Creative Writing course (although I have a degree in Journalism).

mariposa wrote:Tell me - what on earth is FANFIC? It seems like a pretty big thing on here!
Fan Fiction (shortened to "fanfic") is fiction written by fans, based on existing material. Modern fan fiction has its roots in Science Fiction media fndom of the 1970s (both in the US and the UK), but it's actually a very old tradition. Think of it like the 21st cetury version of the Baker Street Irregulars writing Holmes stories based on Doyle's canon, or the 12 century Arthurian legends that tell and retell stories in Wales, Britian, and France.

Same exact deal (writing new material based on existing canon, adding to the canon, reinterpreting the canon, bringing new points of view to old stories and characters, etc.), only instead of publishing it in fanzines, distributed through the post or at conventions the way we did in the 1980s, most writers these days post stories on the internet to archives or Usenet newsgroups.

Basically, if you've ever read Gregory Maguire's _Wicked_, then you've read fan fiction. It's just that Baum's original novels are now in the public domain, so no IP laws are broken :) Same delio with "Hamlet" and "Rosencrantz and Guildernstern Are Dead".

Fanfic is still a mostly underground phenomenon, and a lot of the new generation of writers write as a social activity in their teens. So not all of them actually writers because they're interested in the craft of writing and becoming better storytellers, but as a way to tell stories just to amuse themselves and their friends. So it's become very popular among young people online, the last 10 years or so. Hence the ENORMOUS sample size, and signal:noise ratio which means finding quality stories can be a challenge.

I'm a sad old gaffer--been writing since the late 1980s, used to edit 'zines, run listservs, all that old school fandom stuff. And a lot of my friends write professionally--either for television, or writing original novels and short stories--in addition to writing fan fiction.

He he he, Alan ... I do write/talk a lot. Isn't it great to be married to your best friend? Sounds like you have a sweet story to tell ... welcome to the board, fellow newbie.

Are you taking the CW course or teaching it? Just curious.

BBL to post some. I need to feed the troops.

I'm taking the course on the Open University, along with a Digital Photography course. I've always loved writing and wanted to be an author from about 9 years-old. I got sidestepped into Journalism to combine my passion of football (soccer) but I'm getting back into stories now.

I'll give the abriged version of the meeting between two Buffy fans, which lead to the love of a lifetime

My best friend at college in 1999 got me interested in watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer (ok he forced me watch some eps). I loved the character Willow played by Alyson Hannigan and eventually I joined a email group about Willow and Spike (James Marsters). There I met a girl called "Bluekitten". We were laughing about a certain ep and decided to download Yahoo Messenger to talk to each other in private. This was around the middle of 2000.

In February 2001 we decided to meet. I was going to watch a football match about eight miles away from her so we decided to meet there. Sheelagh, that's her name by the way, came with her Mum and Sister just in case I was a freak (very wise - I had my Dad there) but I think it was love at first site. She hates football by the way but was happy to be there with me.

When I got home we spoke on the internet and one of our other friends (who was a friend of mine from the football) sent us messages saying the other liked each other and would like to go out. He was doing it as a joke but it backfired...very badly (for him at least).

In April I stayed for a week at her house. The Friday was the 19th April (her birthday) and we were talking about how a year ago she said she wouldn't get engaged before her next birthday (which was tomorrow - this was on the 18th). I already had a ring to give her for her birthday so an idea popped into my head.

We were playing a silly initial game like saying "I.N.T.T" for "I Need The Toilet" so I said quite casually "W.Y.M.M". It took her ages to work it out but the answer was yes. We kept our engagement quiet though in case things didn't work out but in July she came up to mine and I made the bedroom all romantic with candles and flowers, etc and proposed properly with a good ring

In August 2003 we were married and still lived apart until the following June as I was still at University. Sheelagh got a house near to her family and I moved down. My Mum and Dad then moved down to the area to be close and we're having a smashing time in South Yorkshire (we've moved twice since 2004 as well - so 3 houses - but we're hoping to stay here for a long time).

Hello Out There! I am not really new to the site, just a little on the shy side and was nervous about posting. I am a big TJ Thyne fan and I am so happy to see there are so many like me. Hope everyone has a Happy 4th of July!!!

Hi there! You are so very welcome. Help spread the TJ love and admiration. So glad you plucked up the courage to say hello, there are lots of people, I imagine, who lurk but don't come in. Well, pull up a beanbag and squat round the sofa. Post freely and if you feel inclined to tell us a bit about yourself we'd love to hear! Happy July 4th!
