Bones 5.13 The Dentist in the Ditch

Post by ThyneAlone »

Well - somebody has to start it. This has already been discussed in a bit of detail in the chatbox, but goodness we have some reluctant posters in there. Serious point folks - don't neglect the inner forums while you're having a great time in the porch!

OK, boring mod hat off cos I had an excellent time in there yesterday with the usual great company - and let's get on with my thoughts.

The Dentist In The Ditch was a reasonable ep but I didn't think it had much in the way of distinguishing features or advancement. Characterwise we had Booth and Brennan moving infinitesimally closer, with Brennan admitting that such a thing as love may exist (in a slightly syrupy final scene) and Booth acknowledging that it was not logical to encourage Brennan to forgive her father murder and yet not be prepared to forgive his brother's girlfriend a period of high-class escort work 4 years ago. The catalyst to all this was the prodigal Jared's triumphant return from his trek in India with the astonishing news that he is ready to settle down! I'll be interested to see if Padme makes it to regular because I think she would bounce quite nicely off the other female leads. However, I admit that personally, having fed a Star Wars obsession in my younger son over a period of several years, I find her name difficult to take seriously. It gives me these mental pictures of Natalie Portman with truly ludicrous coiffures and worse, Jar Jar Binks shaking his huge ears, the asthmatic Darth Vader and a few plucky little Ewoks bristling furrily in the background.

Back in the lab it was all go with some lovely comic relief. Vincent solves the knotty problem of removing clay deposits on the bones by plunging them into a rhubarb bath, Hodgins has a moment of pleasure working out why there were cracks in the skull before rather ruefully admitting that it advanced the cause of death search not one whit; and Cam cringes and scratches hilariously as the remains turn out to be infested with tiny red spiders which spill gratifyingly all over the place and give Hodgins a chance to wax lyrical on one of his favourite hobbies.

It did appear odd that after some time back and forth to the lab and several significant successes Vincent is suddenly rolling over on his back and begging like a large-eyed puppy for Brennan's praise and approval. I know all the interns worship her but this did seem OOC obsequious.

The case itself was fairly straightforward; I understood it!! I did say in the chatbox that the reasons for murder seem to be becoming ever more banal and therefore less believable. On this occasion I can understand a moment of real fury prompting an attack (though, again, I don't feel that an argument over a theft of building equipment would have raised quite those hackles), but not the cold-blooded cruelty that allowed a person to bleed out on the paving stones without a 911 call. I don’t know why the neighbours didn’t notice either!

So those are my thoughts. I might have more if I get to watch it again, but once more this was a frustrating viewer experience with much distracting buffering. Serve me right for being endlessly impatient and watching eps on the Internet. Incidentally it has been very hard to write all this today also, because the box that I am writing in keeps leaping up to the top of the text so I can’t see what I’m typing. An occasional pain in these postings; if it happens to you people a lot, let me know and I’ll ask our admin if he can fix it.

If I can be this persistent I think I am now entitled to ask: What did you all think? :)

Hi all

I've only just got round to watching this epi I've been a bit distracted getting myself orgaised for the filming on Monday. However, I had an hour or so before going to the pub so I thought I'd sit and watch and I really liked almost all of this one.

The bit I didn't like was the spiders I swear I'm still itching but I get that they were a necessary evil.

I loved Brennan in this one, she was a lot more feeling and perceptive but it just seemed natural rather than the previous in your face 'I'm trying to change' I'm also pretty certain now that the B&B relationship is going to move to romantic this season 'cos if it doesn't a lot of the shows credibility is gonna go out of the nearest window.

I like the relationship between Hodgins and Nigel-Murray it has the kind of schoolboy feel that Hodgin's realtionship with Zach had. I'm liking Nigel-Murray a lot more than I did when he first appeared although part way through this he started reminding me of Davy Jones (of the Monkees) for some bizarre reason so then I had 'Daydream Believer' going round in my head!

It was nice that Jared wasn't a pain in the a**e in this one; speaking of a***s if I was him I would so have kicked Booth's when did he get to be so holier than thou his attitude towards Padme really p***ed me off.

Anyway all in all this was more comfy slippers than killer heels but I actually quite liked it for that.

Catch you later

Well, I don't have much to add, because it's pretty much all been said. I don't like when Booth is so over-protective (he gets rather obnoxious), but I liked the way Brennan made him realize that he was being hypocritical. I also liked Brennan opening herself up to a more transcendental concept of love. I thought Vincent was acting a little overly-needy. I enjoyed Cam's distress at the spiders.

I'd have to say that I don't see this crime as being more "banal" or less believable than earlier ones, though. Most of them seem far too pointless to me - the man from the "Pilot" who brutally stabbed & then bashed in the skull of his girlfriend because her pregnancy might endanger his career, the man who repeatedly ran over a girl because she gave him the finger in "The Cinderella in the Cardboard," the lady who poisoned an innocent woman because of $20,000 in "Boneless Bride in the River," that kid that shot her nanny in "Bone that Blew" because he was going to tell that she cheated on a school project, the kid who was strangled with barbed wire because he was trying to leave his band in "Mayhem on a Cross," and so on. I'm not sure what would actually constitute a good enough reason for murder. It always seems like there'd be a better or simpler way to handle the problem, and I'd think almost any result would be better than prison or the death penalty. Of course, people do incredibly stupid & thoughtless things. Didn't Bones say she once saw a woman murdered over a pair of slippers? Anywho, I guess basically I'm just saying it didn't seem any less believable to me, but we each interpret things in our own way. I know there are things people do in real life that I find entirely unbelievable. It amazes me, the amount of selfishness, stupidity or cruelty that others can sometimes display. :(

Also, yes, I get that "jump to the top" glitch all the time when I'm typing out a long post. That's one of the reasons (along with the lag I get when typing directly into the reply box) that I tend to type out my posts in notepad and then copy & paste to the site.

I couldn't agree more. When I said 'ever less believable' I didn't mean that any of the reasons for murder had ever seemed credible in the first place, just that they seemed to be getting noticeably lightweight now. But what the heck, you're right. People kill, maim and torture out there all the time for the flimsiest of reasons. Even sometimes because they just like doing it. Sadly.

Well I don't really have much to say about this one, like I said in the chatbox. I didn't really like it much, other than Hodgins wanting to stir the rhubarb and Cam wanting to burn her hair. :P  Those were the highlights for me. The rest wasn't very interesting to me. I still don't like Jared though Booth was wrong and I did like that Brennan pointed out how hypocritical he was being about Padme.

JOSH MALINA next week. WOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Quick reply; I'm about to fall asleep.
I have to say that I love when Jared is in the show, and I love the relationship he and Seeley share. Though in this episode, it looked like it was in serious danger :|
My favorite part of the episode was the toast at the end... but that's probably because Booth was looking at Brennan in a certain way that just makes me giddy.
My least favorite part was Nigel. I liked him as he was before. A minor character that kind of strived for attention, because he was looking for a job.
Now he just kinda seems like an attention-seeking 12 year old... It was rather annoying.
I dislike the fact that all he looked forward to was getting approval from Brennan.
And I will be very upset if the writers make him and Hodgins best buddies.
I watched this episode on my latptop, so I will probably have more to say when I see it on the Tele.

Hope my post didn't offend anyone, it's merely conjecture :D

:?: Why would it offend? Lots of sense in there.

Who's Josh Malina? *ducks*

Sorry - just never seen the guy in anything! Guessing that's because I don't watch West Wing?

Kayleigh, you are entitled to your opinion! I like Vincent, but did think he was really odd in this one. I think they've been trying to make Hodgins buddies with all of the interns, except maybe Clark.

Seriously though its not surprising you don't know who he is. Josh Malina has been in a lot of things but yes, most people that know who he is know him from The West Wing. He was also in Sports Night.

Yeah. Haha. I get that, but I know some people really like him, and I wanted to clarify that I meant no offense to them.
I just don't like the way they made him seem so desperate.

Well I agree Kayleigh, I didn't like how desperate he was either, it just didn't make sense to me, as it seems like after having been around for so long he'd be used to that by now! Its more like a reaction they should have had him have in the first or second episode he appeared in!

Exactly!
I didn't understand it at all.
Oh, well. I can't wait for the next episode xD
And I don't think I like the thing with Jared and his new Fiancee or whatever...

I didn't mind too terribly that Vincent sought approval. What troubled me was how coldly Brennan seemed to treat him. I mean, she barely acknowledged the poor guy. She never used to do that with Zack. I can remember her saying, "Good job, Zack!" very enthusiasically, quite often. If they're trying to make the point that she's trying not to get as emotionally involved with her interns now, after what happened with Zack, I wish they'd actually make that point, rather than simply having her look like an insensitive jerk. Somehow, though, I don't think they're trying too hard to make that point -- I think they're going for humor, rather than character evolution. So I found her behavior a bit frustrating.
