Character Backgrounds

Post by boo »

I only watched Bones sporadically during the first few seasons so my memory is fuzzy on some of the details. With the show on hiatus, I figured this would be a good time to ask my questions. Some of you reeeeaallly seem to know your stuff. Which is awesome, cuz I thought maybe you could help me fill in the blanks.

First of all .. Sealy and Cam. What exactly was their deal? It seems like she showed up and then they tried to establish some sort of back story for them, like they'd secretly been having a relationship .. but they never really got in to it and then it was suddenly just dropped? Could somebody please explain that?

Also, what is Sweets back story? Was he abused or something? I seem to remember scars on his back. :( :( :( And he was adopted by an old couple who are now dead?

Any clarifications would be appreciated. :D Thanks.

I know Cam and Seely had something going on around when she first showed up, and I'm pretty sure they did before the show took place.
They never told anyone in the Jeffersonian about it to my knowledge, and ended it just as soon as it seemed to start.
This was around Aliens in a Spaceship, as they were having a secret lunch when they found about about Brennan and Hodgins being taken.
They had to pretend to be together in the Intern in the Incinerator for her fathers sixtieth birthday, long after they stopped ...whatever the title is.

Sweets, on the other hand, was never explained.
He was adopted at a young age by an older couple at 6 I believe.
We learn his mother was a carnival psychic, and his adoptive parents died within weeks of eachother, shortly before he began working with Bones and Booth.

I hope I helped a bit, anything else I don't know someone else may be able to clarify :P

Actually Cam and Booth didn't have to tell anyone, Hodgins figures it out, remember the scene where he tells Angela "I…I know something. And when you know it, you should know that I know. But I don’t feel we can discuss it until you, you know, know it independently from me." it was in The Girl in Suite 2103. Then when Cam is going to make up a case against the son of the diplomat she touches Booth and Angela knows too ("Oh, yeah, baby. That’s what I’m talking about.").

Brennan actually figures it out in The Headless Witch in the Woods because she is standing behind Cam and Booth when Angela is showing the film of the "attack" and Cam grabs Booths hand and Brennan sees it. So I think everyone knew about them except Zack but that is because he is Zack. ;) They break up after The Man in the Cell, because Booth decides its too dangerous to have a relationship like that because Cam cut open the head without doing an X-ray first and nearly dies when Booth presses her. Does that help?

Thanks, skftex. It does help. I guess I just think it's one of those weird anomalies that sometime happen on this show .. where they bring something up, and then just drop it. For whatever reason tptb must not have really wanted to develop the whole Cam / Sealey thing because we only got vague references and little innuendos, but nothing really BIG. I do remember something where Booth tells Cam that between the two of them, he will always pick Bones. :( I don't remember if they were dating at the time, but if they were .. that was cold!

I recently saw the episode where Sweets' scars were scene by Brennan. It was terrible. So sad. :( But she was so precious when she reached out to him by telling him the story of being locked in the trunk of a car by her foster parents because she broke a dish. :( Of course, that bonding moment is lost in later episodes when she derides him for being a psychologist.

For the Cam/Booth thing:

They apparently had dated at some point in the past, but I don't think it was ever stated exactly how far in the past that was. They first hooked up within the series in "The Truth in the Lye" (Season 2, Ep 5) & dated until "The Man in the Cell" (Season 2, Ep 12), which is the episode in which Cam almost died.

They were not yet dating when Booth said he'd choose Bones. That was in "The Boy in the Shroud" (Season 2, Ep 3). Cam & Brennan had been butting heads all ep & Cam was considering firing her.

CAM: Booth, if Dr. Brennan were to quit-
BOOTH: What?
CAM: If she were to leave the Jeffersonian-
BOOTH: Well, the squints would flee this institution like the French Army.
CAM: And you?
BOOTH: Well, I do as I'm ordered.
CAM: No, you don't, Seeley.
BOOTH: Okay, here we go. What's going on, Camille?
CAM: What if I fired her? What would you do?
BOOTH: I'm with Bones, Cam. All the way. Don't doubt it for a second.

Hey Jade, thanks. And I take your word for it, but it does seem odd, doesn't it? I mean, why would Cam care about Booth if they weren't dating? He was Bones' partner before Cam showed up and he is the one who sort of roped The Jeffersonian in to his investigations, through Bones. So it just struck me as odd that she asked that question.

Meh!

They used to date, and though I could be wrong, I got the sense that perhaps one of the deciding factor reasons for Cam to even work for the Jeffersonian was to see and work with Booth again. That's why I thought she was asking, so she could feel out just how attached Booth was to Brennan and if she fired Brennan would that mean she'd automatically lose Booth, too. Cam's an astute woman; I think she saw some chemistry going on between them and wanted to find out just how deep it went. Booth answered that for her pretty strongly. And she made the choice to try to work with Brennan instead of firing her.

Personally, I'm glad they dumped that love triangle angle between the three of them fairly quickly. It's cliche and I like Cam when she's not used in that way.
