The 2009 BIRTHDAY PARTY thread!

Post by ThyneAlone »

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

In just under a week, Saturday 7th March 2009, it will be TJ's birthday. We rely on you to help us celebrate. Congregate here on that day for a Big Party together!

The idea is to get as many people in and socialising on the party thread (and others, if desired, especially the card thread!) as possible. That's all there is to it. Find a time of day when you have a couple of hours free and keep logged on to meet like-minded friends!

Our time differences now range across 17 or 18 hours, I gather, so we will have to have a roll-on, roll-off arrangement with members coming in when they are able. I am going to try to be around for a few hours late afternoon UK time, which would be early morning for California and probably quite late in the evening for the Australian guys. If I could, I'd stay on the whole time, but it is my own birthday on the previous day and the family has arranged some kind of secret celebration, so I don't quite know where I will be when!

This is the way it will work; as in the Sofa thread, this cyberspace is now a very large room. I will be dropping in once or twice in the week to clean it up, prepare things, decorate and do some cooking in the kitchen annexe. On the day, people will come in ready to make short, conversational posts, nothing too long; describe what they are wearing (it can be silly, sexy, it can be a TJ tribute, whatever); say what they want to eat and drink; choose some music (as it's a cyberparty we can have all our favourites simultaneously); dance; and, most importantly, give and receive gifts. The way this works is everyone brings a virtual present for TJ (can be anything from a puppy to world peace) and is then given a present back from a lucky dip. Your parcel contains something YOU really want, which you describe as you open it!

Come and go as you please. The chatbox will be a chill-out room, should anyone want a quick word over there. If you can't login for some reason you will be able to contribute there.

Now I am depending on our Regular Visitors here. We have many loyal but infrequent callers who won't know about this unless you broadcast it
widely to them all. LJ is a good base for this kind of thing, if you have a page. Get out there and advertise. Sharon, Rebecca and I cannot contact everyone; we have too many members now for that. Tell them that the Birthday Boy has promised to make an appearance if he possibly can!

Now I am going to open this thread officially.
*closes door, looks round* That's a relief. I thought my arms were going to drop off coming upstairs with these huge bags. Let's see now, kitchen, freezer. Oh good, nice big one. I'll get these snacks in for the buffet. Looks like the place could do with a good vacuum, so I'll run that round tonight too. Must go out and buy some balloons and streamers tomorrow, and fix up a firework show outside the window. Do feel free to come and join in the preparations. It's fun creating a solid place to come in your mind. Anyone know a good DJ?

Hi Steph/Everyone

I'm always up for a party, virtual or otherwise so I will drop by on the day, might have to find myself a date, I'm thinking virtual party, virtual date i.e. anyone I can imagine wanting to accompany me to a party, this is fun!

I'm not the one to ask DJ wise I'm not really that current with my musical tastes in general, I am one of those very sad people who loves all the tacky '80's stuff, especially when alcohol is involved. Hey the start of the 80's was the start of my teens so its understandable.

I've recently discovered cooking/baking in a big way (better late than never) so I'll bake a cake any suggestions? Oh and drinks wise, I know this is very teenage of me, but anyone for Blue WKD? (I love it apart from the whole chow like blue tongue effect). Oh and for later on maybe tequila slammers.

Well I'm off to get my party frock (N.B. a virtual party is the only place I would ever wear anything other than trousers, 'cos virtually I can have killer legs! Happy Days!)

Anway catch you at the party

Ooooooo excitement. I'll bring alcohol (unless you don't drink). Can already see Jude is in the spirit of things with the WKD but I will stick to the vodka. Or the beer. Or both. :D

I'll also bring amazing dance moves.

Ooooooooooo real excitement. I'll coming knocking as early as possible. No point in having a party, if it's not going to be one, long, messy night!!!

See u there.

Hi!
Looking forward to the party. Guess I can make it in the afternoon my time, like Steph. And then late in the evening, again. But I don't know exactly.
Well, I don't like alcohol very much - one reason I have a nasty cold at the moment, another reason I don't like the taste and how it makes me feel the other day. So I'll bring some softdrinks like juice and Coke and Chips. Maybe I can think of something else.
I like 80s music. I grew up in the 80s. So let's have some!
Hope to see you all.
Simone.

Two cake offers! Brilliant, I'm not the world's best cook, so if you can get together and do a nice big cake with candles, that would help a lot. And Simone, there is no need to drink anything you don't want to, by all means get the soft drinks set up. Thanks!

Right, given everything a good polish. The trick is actually to spray polish into the air to make people think the place has been cleaned, but I have done it for real and the furniture is gleaming. Trouble is, I now have to climb on it to hang all these decorations. Lucky you're here to lend a hand, Simone. I have this wonderful big 'Happy Birthday TJ' banner, but putting it up on my own would have been like hanging wallpaper singlehanded. There you go...take the other end...perfect. I also have lots of balloons to inflate and a chocolate fountain I'm going to set up in that corner over there. Busy busy. And fairy lights all round the windows I think. Wonder if we have any oversized fat cushions for people to sprawl on, try that cupboard by the window. Better not put those anywhere near these giant punch bowls I found! Yep that's right - one for alcohol punch and the other for the favourers of softer fare.

Incidentally, the music I'm bringing will probably be mostly the great 70's trash of my own adolescence. So don't dismiss your 80's stuff till you've heard my karaoke Saturday Night Fever. Oh, yes, didn't I mention the karaoke machine? Oops!

Karaoke is cool, mostly watching but also partaking after a fair amount of alcohol (really, really badly by the way, think Cameron Diaz in 'My Best Friends Wedding.)

9 to 5 is the only song I've ever sung on karaoke, what possesses me to sing a song that is so fast I don't know but it seems like a good idea until I lose the ability to breathe and start turning blue by the second verse. Maybe I'll try Mamma Mia at the party, maybe I'll be really good virtually.

Or we could follow in Brennan's shoes and do a group version of 'Girls's Just Wanna Have Fun'.

Jude, I think your song choices are perfectly valid and fun. Can't wait to hear you belt it out, whoo! *BIG GRIN*

Steph, I would pay money to see you sing karaoke of 'Saturday Night Fever.' *is giggling* Though I think 'Boogie Shoes' might be more fun. ;)

Thanks for sprucing up the place. You are an angel.

Right, now I am nervous. Second in on the day(your message came up at 1.00 am our time, Sharon, so exactly right)! Still got my apron on over my off-the shoulder little number in royal blue with sequins and matching accessories, which looks ridiculous, I know, but as I am going to grab some fancy dress as a car park attendant later on, I'm not too bothered about incongruity. Got to get the food out and I refuse to spill anything on this. The virtual high heels are terrific, the only ones I've had that look spectacular but feel like I am walking on air. Might be that I have lost a couple of stone in weight since I sat down at the keyboard though.

Wow Sharon, the place looks lovely, pristine. Excellent banner there over the door/homepage. Did you think about maybe putting a message up there to direct the casual visitor? Right now - I am going to put this big sawdust-filled Secret Party tub - well it's the wrong time of year for a secret Santa, even though the concept is similar - by the door. Everyone coming in will be pulling out their current important wish, but I'm not doing mine till I have company, despite the temptation!

Opening up the chill room/chat box. Big sofas everywhere, soft and enveloping, and a wall screen showing TJ's screen work on a loop. Not too loud, but fine for anyone who wants to just come in and watch. Glasses by the punch bowls... oh darn, dropped a glass, that's how nervous I am, where's that hoover?

Nibbling a vol-au-vent as I pass through to the massive kitchen. Well, come on - the food replenishes itself and I'm hardly going to gain weight!!!

PS Setting the scene, folks, please don't make all your posts long or we will never get to have a conversation!

I can't be in this evening after about 7.00 UK time and will have to pop out at times to shop/shower/work etc. Which means that you should NOT go out if you come in and I'm not here: wait around a bit and I'll look in soon. Make sure someone is meeting and greeting, handing out gifts and celebratory drinks and commenting on outfits, hey? Ta!

Oh, nearly forgot, here's my gift for you, TJ (on the side table, folks).
Hamlet on the London stage. So I can get to see you live!

Good morning/afternoon/evening, whatever it might be in your part of the world.

It's 11am here, is it alright to start partying early?

Happy Birthday TJ.

Jude! Welcome! Doesn't it all look great? OK, I'm going to let you root around in the tub. Open your secret party bag and tell us what's in it. What's your current desire (it can be anything - even for Man U to lose all their remaining games...)?

And what did you bring for TJ?

Hi Steph

Happy Birthday for yesterday btw.

I have a cool pressie for TJ but anyone else that comes in today can have one too 'cos I'm feeling so generous, its called the 'What you really want voucher' and entitles the bearer to:

1 book or CD of choice (boring one first)
1 lead acting role (any media)
1 gift to be given to any other person of choice
1 visit to any moment in your life so far

These all have to be used in the present but one for now or in the future

1 hug for you or from you from or to anyone of choice when its needed.

Just a gift but it would be cool to know the reasons for any choices especially from TJ, payback for the questions I answered.

If I could have a wish at the moment I think I'd wish for a good birthday for TJ and anyone else who has a birthday today, birthday's should be fun.

Ok party bag oh a hat red of course, party poppers to annoy everyone with oh and chocolate has to be chocolate!

Sorry late getting back to you there, Dave has been showing me a hilarious youtube video of Drogba and Lehmann falling over, like they always do when you knock lightly against the telly.

That all sounds fantastic! You've just reminded me, must answer TJ's questions in the next day or so, been thinking about it and have some ideas.
ANYway - wow, how generous, thanks! I'll save the hug. However I'll use the gift for someone else to give my mother back the health and energy she had 10 years ago; I'll revisit my wedding cos I love this centre-of-attention malarkey; I'll have Titania in my favourite Shakespeare, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'; erm...but I'll have to think a bit about the book/CD thing, everyone is giving me loads of those for my birthday!
